Weekend Getaway....
was at Phuket over the wkend...the place is not bad...nice beach..hotel i stayed at was nice too. nice room, nice pool, nice food... sun was real damn hot! u cld bake under the sun in 5 mins flat....confirmed! beach is clean, filled wif a row of beach chairs, up for rent at 100baht per pair, comes wif a beach umbrella. sea is so-so. scenery from the beach is nice - clear horizon dotted wif v few small ships/yacht.
however, there were still remnants of wat the people in Phuket would not forget in many years to come - tsunami waves. Patong beach is whr my hotel was located and the area happened to be the worse hit on Phuket Island. even though it's around 2.5 months since the attack of the killer waves, many of the beachfront shops were still under renovation...some look like the owner might hv given up on it, perhaps died in the disaster? it's rather saddening to see some of the sights...and how some people r actually slping by the roadside, outside their stores, we reckon they were made homeless by the waves... Many only had makeshift stores now, since their original storefront probably need a few months to be restored. *this is not cuz they r going to do up their store front elaborately, but cuz they prob dun hv money to do it or tt the people skilled in this area is bz wif bigger clients.*
We saw some shocking pics of the plc after the killer waves had left. I wonder y some people can do things like tt, and if anyone wld actually buy such pics? The one which left a deep impression, is one of the beach, scattered wif dead bodies....it's a wonder i still dared to go to the beach while i was thr... :( There were oso many which showed remains of houses, hotels...I din really take close looks at the pics cuz I prob will get affected by them.
We had planned to IMMERSE in the nightlife on the 2 nights tt we were thr...tt's the whole pt y we chose to stay near Patong. It's famous or rather notorious for the overly vibrant nightlife...agogo bars, discos which stay open till 6am, gay bars, etc... We were utterly disappointed... first nite, went to agogo bars, was ok, hmm....saw some disgusting acts....eye-opening, i guess. But we noticed that thr aren't much crowd even though it was a friday. Next nite, we had planned to chiong. went to several discos, which r supposed to be happening ones as recommended by online guides, but they were almost deserted... v v few people... we almost gave up until we came to one wif slightly more people. Though the music was TOO loud... *my frens said the volume was normal but I din tink so. i cld feel the force of the beats on my hair...tt's too strong! and we cld barely tok in thr...horrible plc. if not for the fact tt we were sort of promised a cabarnet show, we wldn't hv stayed for long.* The manager was from Singapore too. He came to tok to us a few times, telling us how gd the life thr was and he sort of suggested the guys shld go over thr to do some biz. But the music was so loud, i tink all of us prob only caught at most half of wat he said. he was rather frenly.
In spite of such conditions...some sellers there r still reluctant to sell things at cheaper prices. Some even have bad attitude... we were at this store selling board shorts...we had asked for how much...a shocking 500baht caught us by surprise...tt's around S$15...not quite worth it for a pair of fake bilabong ya? we tried to bargain but the seller juz wldn't give a better price and commented tt thr r ppl who wld buy the shorts at tt price. So we juz din buy in the end.. Not so frenly thais huh? Tink the ppl in Phuket r too pampered by the Ang Mohs who frequent the island... :(
Well...i guess tt's all... if u wan to visit Phuket in the near future, aviod Patong. the things thr r the most expensive and the famous night life is nowhere as vibrant as the one illustrated in online Phuket guides. U r better off going to other areas like Kata or Karon with nicer beaches, and Kata is a good choice. consider staying at kata beach resort. From the outside, we were impressed and tot we cld stay thr on our next visit to Phuket if we were to decide to brave the merciless SUN again, tt is.
Till then, the Andaman Seas...
